Even in 1945, we were worried about providing jobs to returning veterans...

If only our government could follow thru now like they did in 1945...

  1. Considering literally EVERY able-bodied man over 18 and under 40 who wasn't already doing a "vital" job (policeman/fireman/doctor) was eligible for the draft, it doesn't seem too exaggerated.
    And, both the Navy and Marines were volunteer only.
    (The Air Force was not a separate branch. The other services had aerial divisions.)
    So totaling everyone under arms or working as civilians directly for the military probably ran around 40,000,000 or so.
    And politicians DO tend to exaggerate numbers in these matters...
